And then the silence smiled is a children’s workshop led by Czech artist Kateřina Zochová. Zochová experiments with sound, builds musical instruments and composes music and in the workshop shares her curiosity and enthusiasm about sounds and non-sounds with kids between the ages of 11 and 14. Together they discover the world of noises, tones, sounds, music and silence in two workshop sessions in April and May 2018. The kids are invited to discover silence and make friends with it – though not necessary while being quiet. The workshop makes the young participants think critically about what would happen if there was no silence and if the sounds really need it. They discover the genre of sound collage, use different musical and non-musical instruments, and create sound portraits in groups or in pairs.
