Bergen Kunsthall, in cooperation with Tag Team Studio (Bergen), invites young artists, writers and new beginners in art criticism to a workshop with Kristian Vistrup Madsen.
The workshop will be exploring subjectivity and narrative in critical writing as ways of challenging on the one hand, the notion of objectivity, and on the other hand “the illusion of the single mentality”. The latter definition belongs to the legendary writer and cultural critic Jill Johnston and refers to the idea that anyone’s subject position may be stable and self-contained.
The workshop will take place in Bergen Kunsthall on 12-13 October, and will open with a public talk titled “Art Criticism is Too Easy”, in which Madsen will be giving an observation of the contemporary economic and social conditions for writing art criticism, and some of the debates about what good art criticism is.
The workshop will be conducted in English.
Participants to the workshop are recruited through an open call. With writing exercises, discussions, and collective readings, the workshop will build on a critical approach to writing as a cultural practice and focus on the critic’s role as an independent voice in the social debate.
