Barcelona-based artist Jordi Ferreiro will be taking over the main reception space of Lighthouse 15-19 July. During the week Jordi will co-host three public communal lunches with different speakers. They’ll share their experiences and thoughts on what cultural organisations need to do if they genuinely want to become inclusive of different perspectives in the way they work.

Independent curator, writer and editor Jamila Prowse hosts the final lunch to ask how workers inside and outside cultural organisations can hold space for listening to and caring for each other. In trying to be more open to marginalised groups, institutions often claim to hear the needs of their audiences, artists and employees – but in reality is anyone really listening and do they really care?

Over lunch, Jamila invites you to discuss questions with her such as: How as workers in institutions do we practice care towards artists and those who work with us? As independent artists and curators, how do we find and hold space for ourselves, our mental health and financial stability? How do we each perform self-care and how do we care for each other? And how can care become a radical act of resistance, as in the words of Audre Lorde, when performed by women of colour?

The lunches are open to all. Parents and carers with children are welcome.

Jamila Prowse is an independent curator, writer and editor. In her work she draws upon dance and club cultures to develop new languages around identity within the visual arts. She is founder of Typical Girls Magazine, an annual publication which seeks to widen the representation of self-identifying women in the media. Alongside her independent practice, Jamila works as Assistant Producer across Learning, Art and Technology at SPACE studios (London) and was previously Project Manager at Lighthouse on Last Dance, a year-long programme of exhibitions, workshops, talks, films and podcasts exploring the changing nature of UK club culture. Recent independent projects include ‘Dancing in Peckham’, a group show of moving image and photography exploring dance as a unifying practice, Peckham 24 (May 2019); MOVE, a solo exhibition by Ronan Mckenzie exploring the multiplicity of black womanhood through dance, 1-1 in Basel (March 2019); ‘Reflections of Us’, a curatorial training programme for BAME people aged 16-25, Brighton Photo Fringe (October 2018).
