Barby Asante

Barby Asante is a London-based artist, curator, and educator. Her collaborative, performative, and dialogic works are concerned with the politics of place, space, identity, and the histories and legacies of colonialism. Declaration of Independence is an ongoing collaborative project with different iterations that has been performed in the Diaspora Pavilion (2017); Library of Performing Rights and Live Art Development Agency (2018); BALTIC Centre of Contemporary Arts (2019); Bergen Kunsthall (2020) and other places. Since 2017 over 70 womxn from across the world have been involved in performances and rituals around Declaration of Independence. Asante has also taught at arts academies in London, Berlin, Gothenburg, and Rotterdam.
