Debby Friday
Vancouver-based producer and vocalist DEBBY FRIDAY empowers with the sound of violence. True of both her first EP BITCHPUNK (2018) and the tip-to-tail artist-made DEATH DRIVE (2019, Deathbomb Arc), FRIDAY probes Freud with drill, punk and techstep. In music self-described as‘thunder’ the artist adds nuance to the false stigma of female queer black aggression.
A self-described experimentalist, born in Nigeria and now based in Vancouver, DEBBY FRIDAY is an anomaly. Her audio-visual work resists categorisation. The sound theorist and musician, composer and performer, video artist, poet and punk god explores ritual, transformation and emotional intensity, as well as feminine aggression and discourses of power and eroticism. In 2018, she released her first self-produced EP BITCHPUNK to reverberating underground acclaim. She wrote, produced and engineered her sophomore EP, DEATH DRIVE (2019), that features NON Worldwide’s Chino Amobi and Deathbomb Arc labelmate Lana Del Rabies and directed the music video for its lead single FATAL. The Bandcamp Album of the Day received glowing reviews from Pitchfork, Quietus, Wire and FADER, among many others.
