Hugo Esquinca’s work explores spatio-temporal relationships of technology’s interactions with the sonorous, both within and beyond audibility. Most of his work consists of site-specific compositions and installations designed for a specific architecture, and aims to uncover the complex resonatory potential of a concrete space. Esquinca also draws upon an aesthetics of error, heavily escalated sound and on unexpected situations produced by variable acoustical conditions, such as the limitations of a sound card or the listeners’ perceptual tolerance.

His noise music is visceral and confrontational, and preferably performed in pitch black environment.

The residency at STEIM – organised by Sonic Acts – enabled Esquinca to develop a new sound work to be played on ‘The Pentacle’ sound system that premiered NEXT 2018 | Advanced Music Festival in Bratislava at A4.

The Pentacle 15.3 Surround Sound System is a powerful high fidelity mobile speaker system, developed at STEIM in Amsterdam and consisting of 15 self-designed loudspeakers and 3 self-designed subwoofers. STEIM (STudio for Electro-Instrumental Music) is an independent electronic music center founded in 1969 which has been supporting an international community of experimental electronic performers, musicians, and visual artists in developing unique instruments for their work for several decades.
