Wurmkos

Wurmkos is a group of artists and practioners, and a visual art project, founded in 1987 in Italy.

It is an open space and a laboratory conceived as an experience that put into relationship art and people with mental disease  outside the frame of “art therapy”. The group is formed by different people – artist and non-artists, people with and without problems – that cooperate to realize projects and works of art based on a participatory approach and a laboratory practice, public art works, performances, lectures, workshops.

Over time, a group of people has become a permanent nucleus to which other people joint for specific projects. Inspired by Franco basaglia, the Italian psychiatrist who at the end fo Seventies operated to close the Italian psychiatric hospitals in Italy, Wurmkos works as a group of artists through collaborations, putting into discussion the concept of sharing, commons, inhabiting space, cohabitation, public space, caring, social engagement and civic commitment. Wurmkos’s projects are always based on cooperation, calling to actionn several people and disciplines. Along more than 30 years, the group has participated, in several exhibitions in Italy and abroad. Wurmkos also run the non-profit space Farmacia Wurmkos located in Sesto San Giovanni in the outskirt of Milan.
