Borealis X Laugaren: Tuomas Toivonen – Sonic Sauna

Borealis 2025 presents:
Finnish sauna owner, architect and musician Tuomas Toivonen takes residence at Bergen’s unique floating sauna “Laugaren”. Transforming the sauna itself into an ambient sonic instrument he creates a dynamic sonic layer that emanates from the sauna building itself. An active musician, Tuomas is deeply engaged with the role of sound in the sauna process. Having designed, built and now operating Helsinki’s renowned Kulttuurisauna with designer Nene Tsuboi, for this Laugaren project Tuomas is in creative conversation with Laugaren architect and co-founder Bjørnar Skaar Haveland. To enact this sauna transformation, Tuomas will bring mechanical, acoustic and electronic objects to amplify the interplay between the sauna building and its natural environment, the sonic phenomena that result from the extreme heat and cold of the bathing process and the community of people who together build the Laugaren sauna culture.
