Charlemagne Palestine is an American composer, sound and visual artist known for his intense, ritualistic, and minimalist works from the 1960s and 70s, which often involve long-duration electronic and piano pieces. Originally trained as a Jewish cantor and then a carillonneur, Palestine also creates visual art and video, using signature props like teddy bears and cognac in his performances. He is a contemporary of artists like Philip Glass and Steve Reich, and continues to perform and exhibit internationally, living and working in Brussels.
