Residency

Sonic Acts welcomes Pierce Warnecke as the next resident of the Spatial Sound Residency – a programme supporting artists working with multichannel composition and spatial sound.

A multidisciplinary artist working at the intersection of experimental music, digital, and video art, Warnecke’s practice explores the effect of time on matter. Through contrasts of scale and intensity, he examines the limits of human perception. Warnecke has presented performances and installations at festivals such as Sonic Acts, Rewire, Mutek, INA GRM, ManiFeste, and CTM Festival. Since 2011, he has co-curated the emitter micro label and festival with Kris Limbach and Seiji Morimoto, and since 2020, Le Signal Festival with Louis Laurain. His music has been released on raster, Room40, and Contour Editions.

During his residency from 5 to 11 January 2026, Warnecke is working on a new commissioned piece for the Listening Rooom, titled Empathy Exchanges: Archaeophone Transcodings. This speculative project imagines post-human anthropological studies conducted by the Intertemporal Research, Recovery and Retrospection Institute (I.R.R.R.I). In a distant future, long after societal collapse, the researchers attempt to decode human communication from the early twenty-first century, using a device called the Archaeophone. The distorted transmissions they retrieve reveal fragments of everyday emotion, intimacy, and communication from a world whose languages, technologies, and lives have otherwise vanished. The signal is unstable, flickering between voices, noise, and mistranslation, like radio contact with a world already gone. Listening becomes speculative archaeology: piecing together a civilisation from feeling alone. During the Sonic Acts Biennial 2026, the work will be presented as a playback at the Listening Room programme, a sound exhibition hosted at Zone2Source.
