Jana Winderen

Jana Winderen

Jana Winderen is an artist with a background in mathematics, chemistry, and fish ecology. Her work focuses on the sonic environments of species and phenomena that are difficult for humans to access – deep underwater, beneath ice, or within frequency ranges beyond human hearing. Through field recording, spatial sound, and installation, she reveals the hidden ecologies and acoustic complexity of these worlds.

Winderen has presented site-specific installations and performances internationally, including The River at Jerwood Gallery and London’s Natural History Museum in 2024, Lost Voices at the Ringve Music Museum in 2023, and The Art of Listening: Underwater at Columbia University’s Lenfest Center for the Arts and Art Basel Miami in 2022. Her works bára, created in 2017 for TBA21–Academy, and Spring Bloom in the Marginal Ice Zone, made the same year for Sonic Acts, deepened her ongoing exploration of marine and Arctic soundscapes.

In 2011, Winderen received the Golden Nica for Digital Music & Sound Art at Ars Electronica, and she continues to release her work through Touch Records.
