Gabrielė Černiavskaja’s The Whisperer is a performative sculpture with a custom-built vocal instrument that plays a continuous soundtrack. The artist and participants periodically activate it, overlaying speech, song, and readings on soundtrack to address topics of space and spatial abuse in relation to addiction. Grounded in architectural practice, Černiavskaja probes the spatial consequences of addiction and dependence on personal and societal levels. She interprets spaces as bodies, having nervous systems affected by habits and substances, with our psychological and physiological responses to them reinforcing how social dynamics collectively form.
