Ieva Gražytė transforms a treasured family heirloom into a stage for sharing her text Theory of Care. These writings are the result of her extended research into symbolic and exchange value, personal stories of market relations, and political histories of the Lithuanian region merged with her parents’ stories of significant historical moments. All of this is embodied in the intricacies of one sentimental piece of family property – a carpet Gražytė’s mother won at a casino while pregnant with her. This written work, further contextualised by its reading on the borrowed rug, is reminiscent of a dystopian scarcity felt in 1990s Lithuania, when the country was experimenting with the value of goods, property, and laws.
