In Oto Aulos, the ancient double-pipe aulos (played by Lukas De Clerck), an instrument associated with Pan, the Greek god of nature, is computationally reinterpreted by Marcin Pietruszewski. The aulos’ sound is transformed into spectral and spatial events through algorithms that echo the pipe’s mythic excess and sonic instability. Drawing on psychoacoustic research – particularly distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs), the subtle tones generated inside the inner ear – the piece treats these phenomena as both material and inspiration. The result is spatial audio shaped by the meeting of acoustic sound, breath, human perception, and computation – volatile, fluttering, and full of ambiguity.
