All Solids Melt Into Aether draws on a series of explorations into harmonic (in)stability due to fluctuating air pressure, using recordings of the tunable Liardon/Felsberg choir organ located in the church of La Tour-de-Peilz, Switzerland. The small organ is tuned in 1/4 comma meantone temperament, and air is pumped into the bellows mechanically using a foot pedal. Maria recorded the pipes activated individually by singular pedal strokes, the changing air pressure giving the end of each note a slow downward glissando in combination with a slight diminuendo. As a parallel sound source, Maria used SuperCollider to form a pitch grid to produce pitches of extreme stability or precisely calculated instability. This piece is an exploration of the inherent beauty in harmonic balance as well as its collapse—a parallel to the human struggle to manifest and maintain stability and systematization in relation to the perceived entropy of existence.
