Workshop

Public Attention is a sound-based workshop exploring collective rhythm, sonic togetherness, and the creation of shared attention. Taking place in Studio 1 of Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ and drawing from grassroots protest practices – chants, call and response, protest music, noise interventions, and rhythmic actions that mobilise bodies in public space – the workshop examines sound as a political tool and a practice of resistance.

Open to anyone, with no prior skills or experience required, participants are invited to experiment with making sound together, using rhythm, breath, voice, and simple instruments such as a mist horn and percussion to explore how temporary forms of collectivity take shape. The session is hands-on and process-focused, opening a space to sense how sound can gather people, shift energies, and activate presence.

The workshop builds on an ongoing artistic research project by Roman Tkachenko, examining the politics of sound in public space, extending that inquiry into a shared, participatory setting.

Part of New Perspectives for Action, a project by Re-Imagine Europe, co-funded by the European Union. Co-produced in collaboration with Rizoom.
