Spatial Sound Residency

Spatial Sound Residency

01 Jun 2025 – 01 Apr 2026
Rotterdam (NL)
Residency

Sonic Acts is opening the Spatial Sound Studio in Rotterdam for artists to experiment, compose, and realise multichannel soundworks. Marking a new chapter in Sonic Acts’ 30-year storied engagement with spatial audio, the space will host residents – at first selected by the Sonic Acts team as part of a pilot programme – that will develop their newly commissioned pieces, which will premiere at the Sonic Acts Biennial in February and March 2026.

Since the mid-1990s, Sonic Acts has explored how sound behaves in space – pushing the limits of composition and perception. The residency builds on this rich legacy while offering space for artists to attune to future sounds.

First residency artists
Residents in June and July 2025 include C. Lavender, an interdisciplinary sound artist and educator based in New York City, whose practice explores the therapeutic and perceptual dimensions of sound through performance, installation, and guided listening. Also in residence is Clara de Asís, a composer and performer whose work spans electroacoustic music and minimalist forms, often focusing on silence, resonance, and the spatial experience of sound.

Further artists invited to participate in the residency include BJ Nilsen, Sam Dunscombe,  KMRU (Kenya) & Aho Ssan. They will be joined by many others in the coming period.
