From the vast plains of the Dutch polders to the northern reaches of the Frisian mudflats, artist and educator Cocky Eek has developed a practice deeply rooted in the sensory exploration of the environment, and in the understanding that we are very much part of it.

Through installations, fieldwork, and an array of inflatable structures, Cocky Eek probes the limits of our sensory apparatus, experimenting with the layers that envelop the human body and the air moving between the concentric, ever-expanding surfaces that surround us: from skin to clothing, from clothing to architecture, from architecture to the environment.

This work takes shape in a series of dreamlike inflatables and tangible experiments, and extends into her role as a teacher at the ArtScience Interfaculty in The Hague, as well as her long-standing involvement with FoAM, a transdisciplinary network working at the intersection of art, science, and nature.

In this podcast, Cocky Eek dives into the conception and development of her inflatables– a delicate balance of fabric, air, and anchoring– as well as the challenges of preserving such fleeting, fragile materials and moments. Moving through mud, wind, and sand, she reflects on the ambiguous place her work occupies within fine art discourse, and speculates on how altering our sensory perception might, in fact, renew it.
