February & March 2024, Sonic Acts Biennial
At Sonic Acts Biennial 2024, masterclasses, workshops, and field events created space for collaborative learning, hands-on experimentation, and the exchange of applied knowledge.
This video compilation showcases only a small selection of these excursions – beginning with Under Scores, where Tarek Atoui and Kristina Andersen explored the legacy of pioneering electronic musician Michel Waisvisz, and culminating at Het HEM with Sediments, a full day of interactive events at the Zaandam arts centre. There, alongside the North Sea Canal, Minji Kim told A Story of the Wind, following sound and sensation, while Yeon Sung invited participants to Cycle into the Unknown, attuning to the weather. Mint Park engaged visitors with deep listening and DSP algorithms, creating a collective composition as part of Sensing Boundary Layers of the Unknown. Meanwhile, for Residue, Elena Khurtova and Anika Schwarzlose led a field walk into the Hembrugterrein, uncovering traces of its past as a weapons factory. Inside the venue, the artists gathered for talks and presentations, as well as a DJ set from The Social Lover, who mixed archival recordings from Sonic Acts’ 30-year history.
At Zone2Source, Ji Youn Kang’s Spatial Sound Workshop concluded with a final presentation, exploring the interplay of sound and space. Lastly, on tidal plains of the Wadden Sea, Cocky Eek’s Muddy Muddy Mystery Tour – guided by a local mud expert – connected to tidal rhythms through DIY sensing devices.
