Borealis x Varmere Våtere Villere – Listen at Vestre at Borealis 2026
Borealis is excited to present a spatial sound installation at Vestre, in collaboration with the climate festival Varmere Våtere Villere during Borealis 2026.
The installation is part of Sonic Entanglements, the all-evening club concert on Saturday at Østre. At Vestre, the works can be experienced beyond the concert setting, inviting a slower, more contemplative encounter with sound.
The Altitudes by Marja Ahti is a 20-minute composition for loudspeakers that traces an upward movement through the air. The spatialised sound gradually grows in intensity, carrying the listener on a sojourn toward the endless height of the sky. Beneath the tension between gravity and air lies a profound silence—a sonic metaphor for the fragile balance of our atmosphere and the spaces we inhabit.
Karvagraffiti Siellä Kelopuun Keskiruumiin Paikkeilla—translated as “a hair graffiti there on the thorax of the dead wood”—is a spatial sound composition by Atte Elias Kantonen. The work is a sonic exploration of tree-hugging, attempting to translate the tactile act of connecting with a tree into sound. In Finnish, kelo denotes a pine snag: a dead tree standing upright for centuries, supporting ecosystems of invertebrates and organisms. Through these sounds, Kantonen reflects on the persistence of natural life and the delicate interdependencies within our forests.
ORE is an acousmatic composition by Swedish sound artist BJ Nilsen. Developed during a residency at INA GRM, Paris, for the Acousmonium diffusion system, the work draws on recordings made over four years at sites of iron ore and coal mining in Norway, Russia, and the Netherlands. The composition examines the human and environmental impact of resource extraction, connecting sonic textures to societal and cultural consequences.
These works converge at the intersection of sound, space, and environmental reflection. Each piece invites listeners to attune to natural and industrial processes, to consider fragility, resilience, and the urgent challenges posed by climate change. By bringing these sonic narratives into dialogue with the Varmere Våtere Villere, we open up the space for reflection, awareness, and imaginative engagement with our transforming world.
