In the Ukrainian language, the word kolo carries a dual meaning: ‘circle’ and ‘next to’. Anna Khvyl’s composition is created for multichannel sound, where musical gestures flow in a circle, reminiscent of a child’s game, intertwining and colliding with one another. The composition invites the listener to enter an auditory playground, tracing the paths of sounds. KOLO was commissioned by Sonic Acts in the context of the Spatial Sound Platform, and was presented during The Listening Room at Zone2Source in 2024.
Anna Khvyl (UA/NL) is a sound artist, composer, DJ, educator, and researcher with a background in cultural studies and anthropology. Originally from Kyiv, she is now based in The Hague. Her work includes releases, sound installations, audiovisual compositions, multichannel live performances, audio walks, and radio shows in which she explores the relation between sound and commemoration, focusing on how music creates spaces for social bonding and personal self-discovery.
