From crow’s to cod’s perspective – a field recording workshop with esteemed sound artist Jana Winderen.

BEK invites to a workshop for practicing artists and composers lead by the renowned sound artist Jana Winderen. Join BEK for a thorough, technical introduction to field recording for use in multi-channel sound installations, composition, film and video and live performance.

In this workshop, field recordings will be carried out from different perspectives, in urban spaces and nature, and the participants will be able to use various equipment in unconventional and creative ways. Participants will get to explore their own sonic presence, noise and inherent noise during the recording processes, work with different perspectives gained from the placement of microphones and record sound inside and outside the ultrasonic spectrum.

Further, the participants will continue working with the files at BEK, listen in the space and share thoughts and develop good routines for post-production.

The workshop is suitable for sound artists, composers working with sound for film and video, artists using field recordings in their music and the like. Participants should have some experience with field recording and sound editing to get the most out of this workshop.

Programme

Day 1 – Presentations, technical introduction, preparation of the equipment for recording in the field and more.
Day 2 – Field recording outdoors in the urban space and nature, working through different perspectives with placement of microphones, mono sources and methods for recording multi-channel sound.
Day 3 – Post-production at BEK, with composing and putting together sound files. Presentations at the end with dinner and refreshments.

Jana Winderen

Jana Winderen is an artist based in Norway with a background in mathematics, chemistry and fish ecology. Her practice pays particular attention to audio environments and to creatures which are hard for humans to access, both physically and aurally – deep under water, inside ice or in frequency ranges inaudible to the human ear. Her activities include site-specific and spatial audio installations and concerts, which have been exhibited and performed internationally in major institutions and public spaces.
