Lori Freedman & Vesna Pisarović – Residency at KONTEJNER
In conversation. Searching for the mutual vocabulary
Two experienced improvisers; two female musicians coming from a very different parts of the world, Canada and Croatia, will meet at KONTEJNER in Zagreb for their first mutual work during the one week artists residency.
Vesna’s musical language includes jazz vocabulary and extended vocal techniques, and her main focus is sound itself. Lori’s music has been influenced by the music idioms from the 20th century, contemporary music, with signature bass clarinet sound techniques developed through creative performance. The two musicians will spend several days together in Zagreb exploring their duo sound in music. As starting point they will play. And listen. And talk.
They will record and listen back to this music, discussing their individual interests and perceptions in what they are hearing. Through this new duo vocabulary, they will develop an understanding of what they are trying to communicate in sound, both to each other and to their listeners. As well as playing together every day without verbal conversation, i.e. “freely”, Vesna and Lori will also bring their own compositional ideas and exercises to the process. As their time together progresses, they will be preparing for the spontaneous creation of a full set of original music, to be performed on October 3 2024, at the end of the residency.
