Sarah Davachi – Diptych (World Premiere)
Sonic Acts commissioned Sarah Davachi to compose a new piece Diptych for the 2024 Biennial, and Lukas de Clerck to create a new instrument to perform it.
Diptych is a piece composed by Sarah Davachi for viola (Victor Guaita Igual) and telescope aulos (Lukas De Clerck). The Telescope Aulos is a self-designed, collapsible, metal double-pipe, based on the double-reeded instrument of ancient Greek origin.
Diptych delves into the intricate nuances of duality. This duality is expressed through the interaction of the musicians – Ï Î (Lukas De Clerck and Victor Guaita Igual) and Sarah Davachi – and in the distinct functions of the aulos’ two independent pipes, serving as both a chanter and drone. This approach enables the two performers to dynamically navigate moments of perceived consonance and dissonance in real time, challenging conventional interpretations of these terms in the context of harmonic relationships.
