A4 podcast Ep 26: NEXT Special with Kuntari

The duo Kuntari is another addition to the vibrant Indonesian experimental scene. In their innovative soundscapes, aptly named primal core, Indonesian tribal rhythms, animalistic chants, simulated animal calls and electronic effects converge in a dark and organic sonic wilderness. At NEXT 2024, they presented new material released on the iconic Yes No Wave Music label.
In this podcast, A4 speaks with musician Tesla Manaf from the duo Kuntari, elaborating on the band’s background and influences, venturing into Gamelan polyrhythmic music from 700 years ago, noisy Indonesian city-soundscapes, the special instruments and techniques used in their music, metallic-ness, and more.
Originally a jazz musician, Tesla Manaf decided to put aside his guitar in favor of a world full of drum machines, noise boxes and synthesizers. With drummer Rio Abror, they create captivating soundscapes where electronic elements blend with a dark organic sound wilderness.
