Farzané and Arash Akbari – Embedded/Embodied – Video Reportage at Sonic Acts Biennial 2024
Zone2Source, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
February & March 2024, Sonic Acts Biennial
A concept uniting ‘acoustics’ and ‘epistemology’, acoustemology investigates sound as a means of obtaining knowledge, delving into what can be known through listening. Aiming to counteract a bias towards visual practices, it highlights alternative ways of perceiving the world, emphasising the interplay between human and non-human entities.
An octophonic interactive sound installation by Farzané and Arash Akbari ‘Embedded/Embodied’ explores acoustemology through the lens of a situated A.I. system. It studies how an artificial improviser gains embodied knowledge through sonic interactions with its environment. The work was constructed out of several microphones placed in Amstelpark, from where sounds were processed and engaged with by the A.I. agent. The audience could interact with the installation through an iPad available at the entrance of the gallery. ‘Embedded/Embodied’ was commissioned by Sonic Acts with Het HEM. It is part of New Perspectives for Action, a project by Re-Imagine Europe, co-funded by the European Union.
